3rd MAY 1979

On this day in 1979, Margaret Hilda Thatcher became the first and only female prime minister of Great Britain.

Ms. Thatcher, often referred to as the 'Iron Lady', a nickname given to her by a Soviet journalist that eventually came to represent her hard-hitting politics and leadership style, was originally a chemist before becoming a barrister and then a member of parliament in 1959. In her time in parliament Ms. Thatcher was Secretary of State for Education and Science in 1970 under the leadership of Edward Heath, who in 1975 she beat in the Conservative Party leadership election, becoming the Leader of the Opposition, a position which beforehand had never been held by a woman in the UK.

However it was 1979 that was truly a great year for Ms. Thatcher, with her win in the general election that saw her become the Prime Minister of Great Britain. Following this win Ms. Thatcher was re-elected twice, in 1983 and 1987. At the end of 1990, Ms. Thatcher resigned as Prime Minister and party leader after a leadership challenge was made by Michael Heseltine.

In total, Ms. Thatcher served almost 11 years as Prime Minister of Great Britain. Totally inspirational. As she also holds a life peerage as Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven in the county of Lincolnshire, Ms. Thatcher can still sit in the House of Lords.

Magaret Thatcher was, in all the sense of the word, a remarkable woman. Her list of awards, honours and medals is extensive, including such honours as the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest award presented to a civilian in the U.S.

Various films and productions have been created based on her life, most recently that of "The Iron Lady" in which she is portrayed by Meryl Streep, who in turn won an Academy Award for Best Actress.

She didn't create a magic cure for multiple diseases and she didn't save a million people from drowning. But nonetheless, Margaret Hilda Thatcher is one of, if not the most influential women in all of history.

Just reading about her is inspirational.

For me anyway.
